Our first meeting of the second session of Crazy 8s (K-2nd) began today with "Glow-in-the-Dark City." The math today included 3-D shapes, counting, and pattern recognition.
We made 3-D shapes with glow sticks and styrofoam balls. The students were quickly introduced to the tetrahedron, hexahedron, octahedron, dodecahedron (12 sides) and icosahedron (20 sides). Although the kids probably haven't heard some of these words before, and might not remember them any more, they quickly figured out how to make tetrahedrons and hexahedrons. Some of the second graders made an "apartment building" made of hexadedrons (cubes). Everyone had fun making various 3-D shapes and wearing their creations.
The students got to take home glow sticks and styrofoam balls to continue the shape building fun at home. It was great to see many of the students continue making shapes in aftercare and share with friends who are not in Crazy 8s.
Next week we will be doing an activity with small toy cars. Please send a small toy car or small wheeled toy with your child for next week's Crazy 8s meeting. I will try to have extras in case anyone forgets or does not have any.
